These tools are perfect for quick, everyday tune-ups. But for recording sessions, instrument setups, intonation adjustments, or piano tuning, standard chromatic tuners fall short.

That is where strobe tuners come in. By displaying the live phase difference between your instrument’s sound and a perfect tone, strobe tuners offer a 0.1-cent level of resolution, up to ten times more precise than traditional tuners.

But with so many hardware options, mobile apps, and web tools available today, which one actually suits your workflow? To answer that, we recently published a comprehensive Strobe Tuner Comparison Hub on strobopro.se, benchmarking some of the most popular tuners on the market. Below is a preview of the categories and findings from our test.

The Three Categories of Tuners Compared

Our comparison page groups tuners into three distinct categories based on their design and target audience:

  1. Multi-Harmonic Strobe Tuners: These advanced apps, including StroboPro, TB Strobe Tuner, PianoMeter, and Linotune, track not just the fundamental pitch, but also several overtones (harmonics) simultaneously. This is a real advantage for evaluating string health and adjusting intonation.
  2. Single-Strobe Tuners: These are the classic strobe tuners: the Sonic Research Turbo Tuner ST-300 pedal, Airyware Tuner, Groovy Pianotuner, iStroboSoft (iOS), Strobe! What Concurrent Strobe Bands Look Like

One of the most interesting findings in our testing was how different “strobe” apps display harmonics. When we fed a multi-tone signal (110 Hz, 218 Hz, 332 Hz, and 418 Hz) into the apps, we observed three distinct behaviors:

  • Truly Independent Strobes: StroboPro and other multi-harmonic tru-strobe tuners display each harmonic as a completely independent, rotating strobe band. You can watch the fundamental sit still while the upper overtones spin at their own rate, showing you exactly how inharmonic your strings are.
  • Locked-Sync Columns: Peterson iStroboSoft and Groovy Pianotuner show columns representing harmonics, but the columns are locked in sync, acting effectively as a single strobe.
  • Single-Wheel Displays: Classic single-strobe apps and pedals display only a single strobe tracking the dominant fundamental frequency.

The Takeaway: Not all tuners that claim to “show harmonics” display them independently. Genuinely independent multi-strobe bands are crucial if you are doing lutherie setup work or voice/instrument diagnostic work.
