Free Online Tuner: New Instruments and Tunings

We added a batch of new instruments and tunings to StroboPro this week, and every one of them loads straight from a link. If you play something we were missing, there is a decent chance it is in there now. It is still free, it still runs in your browser at strobopro.se, and you still do not need to install anything.

Here is what is new, and where to find each one.

New instruments

Each link below opens that instrument’s page, and the “open the tuner” button loads the preset and locks every string on a 0.1-cent strobe.

• Viola tuner (CGDA)
• Cello tuner (CGDA, one octave below the viola)
• Pedal steel tuner (E9 and C6 necks, all 10 strings each)
• Lap steel tuner (standard and C6)
• Dobro / resonator tuner (open G, GBDGBD)
• Harmonica tuner (10-hole Richter, keys C and G, all 20 reeds)
• Harp tuner (47-string concert pedal harp)

A few notes on the less obvious ones. Pedal steel is fussy because the pedals pull the strings by fixed intervals off the open tuning, so if the open strings are off, every pedal change is off too. A strobe settles the open reference more honestly than a needle. Harmonica is a bit different, since you don’t really “tune” a harp at a gig, but you can now check all 20 reeds and catch the one that has gone flat. And the harp preset covers the full 47 strings tuned in C, with the pedals in natural position.

More guitar and bass tunings

The open tunings were already covered, but the drop and down-tuned variants, which is what a lot of players actually use, were not. Added:

• Guitar: Eb Standard (half step down), Drop C, Drop C#, Drop B, D Standard, C Standard, and B Standard (baritone).
• Bass: Drop D, Drop C, and D Standard.

Drop C in particular gets its own page: Drop C tuner. Same for Eb Standard (the Hendrix, SRV, Guns N’ Roses tuning).

A couple of small fixes

While we were in there we fixed two wrong notes that had been sitting in the data: the baritone ukulele was an octave off on one string, and a banjo Open Cm tuning had the wrong note entirely. Small things, but wrong is wrong.

Where to start

If you just want to tune something right now, the online tuner is the fastest way in. Pick your instrument, allow microphone access, and play.
